Karsan, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of public transportation vehicles, continues to reinforce its pioneering position in the field of electric mobility through investments in its manufacturing infrastructure. Accelerating its efforts to build a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable mobility ecosystem, Karsan has taken another significant step toward its Net Zero Factory 2030 goal with the commissioning of its 3.5 MW DC installed-capacity solar power plant. Emphasizing that sustainable mobility begins at the production stage, Karsan CEO Utku Ayyarkın said: “We embrace a holistic approach that aims to reduce not only the environmental impact of electric vehicles during operation, but also the carbon footprint generated throughout the manufacturing process. Our newly commissioned 3.5 MW solar power plant will supply approximately 25% of our manufacturing facility’s electricity demand from renewable energy sources. The fact that the electricity we generate will be sufficient to power the manufacturing of approximately 1,000 electric vehicles annually demonstrates the tangible environmental impact of this investment.”


Leading the transformation of public transportation with its vision of “One Step Ahead in the Future of Mobility,” Karsan continues to advance its sustainability-driven investments across its manufacturing operations. Supporting electric mobility not only through the vehicles it develops and manufactures but also through the energy sources it uses in production, Karsan has commissioned a 3.5 MW DC solar power plant at its manufacturing facility in Bursa.


Solar Power to Meet 25% of Annual Electricity Demand
Generating approximately 4.6 million kWh of renewable electricity annually, the solar power plant will meet around 25% of the total electricity demand at Karsan’s manufacturing facility. The amount of renewable energy generated by this investment will enable the electricity consumed in the production processes of approximately 1,000 electric vehicles each year to be sourced from solar energy. Through this investment, Karsan extends its zero-emission mobility approach beyond vehicle operation, further strengthening its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its manufacturing processes.

 


Sustainable Mobility Starts with Manufacturing

Approximately 2,000 tons of CO₂ Emissions to be Avoided Annually!
Completed in approximately six months, the project successfully covered all phases, including feasibility studies, engineering, procurement, on-site installation, testing, and commissioning. One of the key priorities throughout the project was to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of Karsan’s manufacturing operations. To maximize energy efficiency, the facility was equipped with state-of-the-art, locally manufactured 620 Wp TopCon Bifacial solar panels and high-efficiency inverters. Featuring bifacial technology, the panels generate electricity from both direct and reflected sunlight, improving the overall efficiency of the solar power plant. With an annual renewable electricity generation capacity of approximately 4.6 million kWh, the solar power plant is expected to prevent around 2,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Reducing manufacturing-related emissions—which can account for approximately 10% to 20% of an electric vehicle’s total carbon footprint—was one of the key drivers behind the investment. Karsan thus aims to complement the zero-emissions advantage offered by electric vehicles during their operational phase by converting the energy used in its production processes.

 


A Strategic Step Toward Carbon Regulation Readiness
Through its solar power plant investment, Karsan aims to optimize energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and strengthen its sustainable manufacturing infrastructure. The project also represents a strategic step in preparing for the European Green Deal, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and other carbon regulations expected to come into effect in the coming years. By increasing the share of renewable energy in its operations, Karsan aims to mitigate future carbon-related costs while reducing the impact of energy market volatility on its manufacturing processes.


Target: Net Zero Factory by 2030!
Solar Power Plant investment marks one of the key milestones in Karsan’s Net Zero Factory by 2030 roadmap, supporting the company’s goal of reducing carbon emissions generated by its manufacturing operations. Continuing its efforts in energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, efficient resource management, and low-carbon manufacturing, Karsan also plans to evaluate the remaining rooftop capacity at its manufacturing facility for additional solar power plant investmnts in the future.
